01 / PUT THE WORDS TO WORK

Small prompts. Real possibilities.

Pick an activity above to set the word count and type. Each preset clears length and first-letter filters, keeps locked words and generates a fresh set.

WRITING / 5 MINUTES

A story with an unexpected turn

Generate six words of any type. Choose one as a place, one as an object and one as a mood. Write an opening paragraph using at least three. Lock the word that gives your story its direction, then generate again for the next paragraph.

For example: lantern, river, quiet → A quiet river carried a lantern past the last house.

DRAWING / TAKE TURNS

One noun, one sketch

Generate one noun. Check that it is suitable for your group, then draw it without writing letters. Let someone guess, swap roles and generate the next word. Nouns are not all concrete or easy to draw; skip an unsuitable prompt.

DESCRIPTION / 3 WORDS

Build a place from adjectives

Generate three adjectives. Describe an imaginary room, landscape or character using all three. Discuss what changes if you swap one adjective. Lock two words and regenerate the third to try a different mood.

02 / HOW TO PICK

Filter first. Then let chance choose.

  1. Choose your constraints

Set a count from 1 to 30, a word type, an exact letter length and an optional starting letter. The matching-word count updates before you generate, so you can see when a combination is too narrow.

  2. Save the useful surprises

Copy a word or lock it. Generate again replaces only unlocked positions. A lock belongs to that word in the current round; it is not a saved account favorite.

  3. Take the result with you

Copy all puts one word on each line. Save .txt downloads the same list as a plain-text file. Use it as a writing prompt or prepare an activity. Preview every classroom set before showing it to learners.

Filters changed? Your locks stay.

Changing filters does not silently erase a locked word. Generate again applies the new conditions to new words and reports any locks outside them. Unlock words before reducing the total below your lock count.

03 / KNOW YOUR SOURCE

A word list you can inspect.

The current collection has 944 unique English words, compiled for this project. It includes common nouns, verbs and adjectives; a word can belong to more than one type. The type labels describe uses included in this collection, not every possible dictionary meaning.

We intentionally omit profanity, slurs, sexual terms and graphic violence. This editorial screening is not educator certification or a promise of suitability for every age, culture or classroom. Teachers should preview the results.

Every entry includes its spelling, word types, letter count, source, license and review status. We do not guess definitions, syllable counts or learner levels. You can download the full word list and metadata under CC0, or read more about selection and scope.

What “random” means here

The tool filters the collection, then samples matching entries with equal probability. No repeats this round uses sampling without replacement and excludes locked words from new picks. Earlier rounds are not remembered, so a word can return later. This is a creative prompt tool, not a password generator.

04 / QUESTIONS

When the words do not fit.

Can I generate random nouns, verbs or adjectives?

Yes. Choose the type in the filter panel. The activity shortcuts also apply real type and count settings. Some words have multiple type labels and can appear in multiple categories.

Why do I get fewer words than requested?

There may be too few matches when length, letter and type are combined. With no repeats enabled, we show the available words instead of quietly filling the set with duplicates. Clear one filter or ask for fewer words.

Can I choose a specific first letter?

Enter one English letter in Starts with. Letter length is an exact spelling length, not a syllable count. If there are no matches, broaden the conditions.

Does this make words from my letters?

No. This random word picker selects existing entries from a limited English collection. Anagram solving, name generation and password generation are different tasks.
